One of the volunteer service projects that most touched my heart was my church-sponsored work at Robin's Nest Orphanage in Jamaica. I logged in over 60 hours of service doing things like painting, cleaning, feeding infants, changing diapers, taking care of children, escorting them to doctor's visits, helping them with homework and interacting with them.
I've always been extremely grateful for even the smallest things in my life. I'm especially grateful for my close-knit family and friends and all of the love that they give me, but also for the many opportunities and blessings that have touched all aspects of my life. But after voluteering at this Jamaican orphanage, I was taken aback by the level of poverty in the area and I was inspired by how happy these children are despite their lack of family members and so many things that people in our country take for granted. It made my gratitude intensify so much and made me realize what's truly important in life.
I'm hoping to one day join my church on another voluteer service trip there. It was truly a life-changing experience and one that I will never forget.
I'm truly saddened to have learned that one of the little boys I worked with, Kemar, has passed away recently from cardiac arrest. Once you've touched the lives of these children through volunteer service, you realize that they've touched your hearts more than they could ever know.
