I was honored to be part of the Miss America's local titleholder's service day at Feed My Starving Children. To have an entire team of compassionate queens all volunteering together to help save the lives of children from other countries was truly heart warming. But it wasn't my first time volunteering with Feed My Starving Children. I've volunteered in the past for a service days with my high school.
My church also works closely with Feed My Starving Children. They often ask for donations for this organization. Every week, a portion of the money members give to church is donated to Feed My Starving Children.
Every year, my church sponsors food drives for this organization. So, each year in elementary school, I organized a school-wide food drive so I could bring in more food for this organization. In 2009, I brought in the most bags of food!
Feed My Starving Children also packages vitamin fortified pre-packaged meals and ships them to starving kids all over the world. They are always looking for teams of 10 to come in for a few hours to help package the meals. One of the things I'm planning to do is to organize my own team of 10 and spend a day helping them.
If you'd like to volunteer for them or find out more, here's their link:
Besides Feed My Starving Children, my church also sponsors other volunteer opportunities that I've been involved with, like Operation Christmas Child. With that, we donate, gift wrap and fill boxes of gifts to donate to less fortunate children. We also have coat drives and many programs to help the troops, like donating DVD movies for the troops overseas. My mom especially likes that because she served for 28 years in the Minnesota Army National Guard where she was a Colonel. So, I guess I can truthfully say that "my mother wears combat boots"!
