A pageant that I was involved with, National American Miss, asked contestants to donate books and school supplies as part of their community service efforts with the girls.  The girl who won the competition received all of the items to donate to the charity of her choice.

I was fortunate enough to win, and the charity organization I selected was Catholic Charities, which is an organization that works closely with St. Joseph's Home for Children.   My car was completely stuffed full of donation items!

 This organization has three primary functions.  They work towards preventing poverty, meeting basic needs in times of crisis, and creating pathways out of poverty.   And the children they serve include some with significant needs.
